Guilty as charged
May 25
John 9: 41Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.
Jesus makes a very important distinction in the above verse, between sin and guilt. Jesus says to the people that they would not be guilty of sin if they were blind. What does he mean by that? Jesus is speaking about spiritual blindness. When you are spiritually blind, you cannot perceive that what you are doing is wrong and all you are convicted by the holy spirit. When the holy spirit speaks to you he will bring about a recognition in your conscience about your guilt.
When Jesus told the Pharisees that because they can see, therefore they are guilty what he is really saying is that because they have seen his miracles with their own eyes and have heard him speak and testify to himself as the son of God, and yet they have not believed in him, they are therefore guilty.
This makes a very good statement about the nature of God, that he is not someone who’s out just to get us and to punish us with some bad that he is understanding of our situation and it is only when we willingly and knowingly so that it really counts against us. At the end of the day the only important question is whether or not your sins have been given and washed away by the blood of Jesus Christ.
