Having fun

One thing about me is that I am a great sports fan. I grew up loving sports and I played everything that had the ball. If there was a bat and ball or a stick of some sort then I was playing. I also then grew up loving to watch sport on television.

One of the things that I’ve had to learn being married is to get a balance in how much time I was in watching sports on television or playing support myself, and how much time I get to spend with family or a church or studying the word of God. This weekend was one of those weekends which was just a fantastic weekend of sports.

When I think of how excited I get when my team wins or when a whole string of results goes my way, it sometimes makes me stop and think about whether I have the same excitement in my Christian walk. Jesus said that I have found that you might have life more abundantly. An abundant life means life is full of joy and full of happiness and the pleasure. It is not the life that is full of frustration and stress and wondering where the next penny is going to come from.

So it is a good lesson for all of us to think about that walk with Christ, and to wonder how much joy it is giving us. If you wake up in the morning or you look back on a week that has gone by and you think why I haven’t really enjoyed spending time with God all enjoyed reading the Word of God, then we need to get back to that moment when we can really have pleasure with God. That is all part of the abundant life that Jesus was speaking about. Do you have a lot of fun when you read the Bible? If not then I suggest that you pray to God and ask him to really give you a sense of joy and a sense of enjoyment when you read his word. Reading the Bible should always be a pleasurable exercise and if it is not then we need to find a better time or find a better place where there are fewer distractions and of course the most important thing it needs to become a habit. The more often I read the Word of God the more I enjoy it. Here’s a toast to the abundant life in Christ.
