How to get smaller
May 2
John 3:30He must become greater; I must become less.
The more I learn about the gospel of Christ, the more precious Christ becomes and the less I think of myself.
Many people came to John the Baptist and they asked him about the person called Jesus who was baptising people. They were really questioning his right to baptise, and of course they had become used to John the Baptist being at the baptiser.
Right from the beginning of the Gospel of John we see the John the Baptist consistently speaks about the one who will come after him who will be greater than him. Then in terms of answering their questions John says that Jesus must become greater and I’m becoming less. This really is a picture of how one develops as a Christian. The natural progress of growth in the life of a Christian, as someone who follows Jesus Christ, is that Jesus is must become a larger in our life and when that happens less of our self will manifest. That may sound strange to someone who does not know teaching of Paul and Jesus. Essentially, the more we learn about Jesus, and the more that we love him the more influence he has in our life. And by this we mean he becomes greater.
The sign of a Christian who is maturing and is growing is that there is less of them self and there is more of Christ. My prayer is that Jesus will increase in my life and I will decrease. But in order for that to happen I have to get to know him more. I have to get to know more of his richness and I have to do spend more time in my relationship with God.
