Proverbs 11:
1 The LORD abhors dishonest scales,
but accurate weights are his delight.2 When pride comes, then comes disgrace,
but with humility comes wisdom.3 The integrity of the upright guides them,
but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity.4 Wealth is worthless in the day of wrath,
but righteousness delivers from death.
The first few verses of Proverbs 11 are all pretty powerful. Each one can be turned into a sermon, because the truth of each one needs to be investigated and expounded. The Lord hates dishonest scales. Scales are used to measure out – they are a weigh of checking the accuracy of things. Dishonest scales means cheating. The Lord abhors cheating. He loves honesty. The two words used here are abhors and delights. They are both quite provocative words.
Pride comes before a fall – and this verse goes further, to say that after pride comes disgrace. Pride is confidence in self instead of God. Once we believe our success, or position or wealth is due to our own ability and has nothing to do with God, watch it. There is a fall coming and with that fall will come disgrace. Humility on the other hand opens oneself up to wisdom.
The integrity of the upright guides them. We need to walk in integrity and to rid ourselves of any dishonest scales. And we need to remember that wealth will be worthless when we die.
