Is God really in control?

In my research preparation for my sermon, I came across as many articles which refer to all kinds of terms which were given to the will of God. For example there is God’s decretive will. This is not even a word I have heard very often before. But basically it comes the Word decree, or to command or to make something happen.

Perhaps at this point it’s important to first understand the sovereignty of God. As Christians we believe that God is sovereign. What does that mean? Well first of all we have to understand that sovereign mean that he is in control of everything.

One of the lines of thought is that can confuse the issue of sovereignty of God is this: if God is in control of everything, how can he allow such dreadful things to happen at the Earth? How can a baby to die at the hands of a drunken father? A young teenage girl to be gang raped while walking home from school? Surely if God is in control the argument goes he would be able to stop that. Since God has not stopped that has allowed it to happen, we must therefore believe that either God approves or gives his permission for this to happen or on the other hand he makes it in order to teach a lesson. If God actually is like that, then how can he be a God of love?

This topic had become extremely technical and it can become very theological. And that is not my purpose for this message today. I believe without a doubt that God is sovereign. If God would not sovereign, he could not be God. We except whether we like it or not that when things happened in it are either those things which are despicable and inexplicable that these things are not beyond the power and control of God. However, I do not believe that God is the cause of these things. We read the book of James that God our Father is a good father and he gives us every good perfect gift.

Well in that case how do we explain that God is still in control and these things happen on Earth? I believe that while God is in control of everything he is not the cause of everything. Nothing can happen outside of overall control of God but God himself does not cause bad things happen to us. We live in a world which is controlled by is and when God created man he gave control in the Earth to man. Therefore as Christians we can sometimes become victims of tragic circumstances simply because other people are exercising their free will which may be done in such a way that ultimately impact on us.

God will always remain a loving God and his intentions and purposes for us will always fully be the best.
