Joshua 1 7-8: Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. 8 Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.
There is no doubt that this is the precursor to seek ye first the kingdom of God. God’s principles have always been steadfast – put me first and make me pre-eminent and then everything else will happen. Putting God first, or seeking him first is like planting seeds. It is not instant. It takes time to ensure the working of principles. Sometimes we are so impatient that we forget to just wait on God. We forget that it is sowing and reaping.
The word to Joshua was to be careful to do everything. This speaks of real intention, and of a diligence and discipline over time. It does not say keep all my laws for a week or two. It is implied that so long as you continue to keep all my lawes exactly (do not turn to the left or right) then you will have great success.
When we meditate on the word of God it will not depart from our mouth. As we read and meditate on the word of God, it will result in a change in the way we think and the way we speak. I am often so swayed by circumstances and by people around me. If the people around me are upbeat and positive and creative, I am more likely to have faith. if the people around me are negative and doubting and miserable, then I am more likely to see the negative and have those vibes overcome me and then to believe a little less. Why is that? Lord help me to believe your word despite my circumstances and despite any negativity. Your word is always true.
