James 5:14 Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord
The only time that we are told to pray for the sick is when we are instructed to call for the elders to lay hands on the sick. But you will not find anywhere else where we are actually instructed to pray for the sick. We are however commanded to heal the sick.
Matthew 10 vs 8: Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.
Now as you know you can put anything into google and if it is a line from scripture it will show up in the automatic prompt and you will see loads of scriptures relating to the line of text you have typed in. So if you type in pray for the sick, expecting a whole lot of scriptures to pop up you may be disappointed. I tried it and guess what – I could not find any. I did find many articles about praying for the sick, and debates about whether or not we should get sick in the first place, but nothing about praying for the sick from scripture.
I must say I was surprised to find that Wommack was right when he said that we are told to heal the sick, not to pray for the sick. It does kind of put a different spin on things. Jesus has provided everything we need already. Prayer is not a way of getting stuff from God. Maybe that is why our prayers are so ineffective. Prayer is not about telling God about our problems (he surely knows) nor is it about begging for forgiveness, as he has already forgiven us. Wow it is really about just speaking to God in faith.
