Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”- Matthew 6:19-21

Yesterday I heard someone preaching on this very topic, as I was flicking between channels on the TV. I stopped briefly to listen but then moved on. I just remember the couple of minutes I spent listening was quite good. Then today as I opened biblegateway, the same passage popped up. I reckon God is speaking to me.

Yesterday I went back to work and went into a long meeting (I mean loooong meeting) with my GM. She was reporting back to me about the events of the last week and about the updated PR profiles for each staff member etc. She was telling me about the staff morale and the staff plans and needs for the coming 12 months. I had been expecting some difficult patches because Nov/Dec is always quite tough cash flow wise. We also came through a patch where November was a fantastic month numbers wise but cash wise was quote poor. Surprisingly, the meeting ended on a very positive note with some new ideas and the possibility of real progress.

And as I spent the entire day consumed by making money and how we can solve financial issues, I come across this passage. God is always looking to see where my heart is rooted. The tv chap yesterday was saying that where your treasure is, is where your source is – you live off your treasure, you feed off your treasure. And it is true. Treasure here is not speaking just about money, it is speaking about what your heart values. If your heart seeks God first, you will be building treasures in heaven, but if your values are on earth they will eventually corrupt and be blown away. Every day brings opportunities to test this. Today I know I will have numerous opportunities to test where my treasure is. I know TV is a big one for me. What will I spend my time watching? Will I take any time today for people who need me, where I can make a difference by just saying hi, or popping in?

God, you know my heart, and how I long to have my treasures fixed in you. Help me not to become distracted by material issues, people, pressing issues, business or anything that will see me laying up treasures on earth. Amen.
