Romans 1: 9God, whom I serve with my whole heart in preaching the gospel of his Son

I remember as teenagers we would fall in love with a girl and tell her “I love you with all my heart”. It was just something one did. God tells us in his word that we need to love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. Here Paul is speaking about serving God with all his heart. Unlike teenage infatuation, this is clearly a mature christian’s declaration of fact.

How do we get there? There are times when I serve God with most of my heart. There are times I serve God with a lot less. To say “all my heart” is pretty hectic. I mean that is leaving nothing left on the floor. It is using all your energy to serve God. It means you have an awesome prayer life, that you prioritise God’s stuff before everything else, that you are walking in power and in the knowledge of God. When we knock, God opens, when we ask, God provides. There must be 10 occassions at least where we read this in the Bible. So we know that as we draw near to God he will draw near to us.

The only way to serve God with all my heart is to surrender a little piece daily. In time that will grow and eventually one can start to approach being able to say that.
