Don’t mess with Jesus

John 2 13When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14In the temple courts he found men selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. 15So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple area, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. 16To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! How dare you turn my Father’s house into a market!”

17His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.”[b]

18Then the Jews demanded of him, “What miraculous sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?”

19Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”

Whenever I read this passage, I always wonder how Jesus was able to drive everybody out. Imagine going into a trader’s market and with little whip being able to drive out hundreds of people all around the place. Jesus must have been like a man possessed, and I mean that in the best sense. He must have been totally in the zone and people when they looked at him they realised this guy means business, I’m out of here.

People usually protect their money with everything they have.

The other thing that Jesus says is how can you do this in my father’s house? It reminds me of a time when Jesus was twelve years old and he went missing and his parents after three days of searching found him in the temple. When they found him, Jesus said to them “why are you so surprised to find me here, surely you would have known that I would be in my Father’s house?”

And then comes the obvious question. People say what gives you the authority to come in here and chased everybody out Jesus and speaks prophetically any says that if you destroy the temple I will raise it up again in three days. We know that he was speaking about his own body and not the actual temple. When Jesus was crucified, he was placed in a tomb but we know that three days later when Mary and the disciples went to see the tomb, they found that it was empty. Jesus had risen hallelujah!
