How well do I know him?
Apr 24
John 2: 1On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.” 4“Dear woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied, “My time has not yet come.” 5His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
The question to ask is how well do I know my Lord? In the above passage it is clear that Jesus has never yet performed a miracle Jesus but his mother realises that here is a situation where Jesus can do something. She does not know what he can but she does know the he has God in him. I wonder if she really believed that he was the Messiah and that he was the son of God? Remember that she was told by an angel she would conceive and she would have a child from God.
Here we can see Mary seeks out her son Jesus tell him that there is no more wine. She simply says to him they have no more wine. I love the way that Jesus responds and he says dear woman why do you involve me? And then Jesus goes on to say that “my time has not yet come”. His mother just ignores all of this and tells his disciples must just do whatever he says.
The thing here is that Mary knew that at some point Jesus was going to perform miraculous. She did not know that he would do anything in a public manner, but she simply knew Jesus and so she just asked him and said to him we have a problem. I wonder if God had somehow prompted her to say this is at the time and to go and ask Jesus do something about the problem. I guess we will never know but when we get to heaven it will be interesting to ask Mary why she asked Jesus about the wine at that particular point in time.
She tells the disciples to do whatever he asks them to do. She has confidence that Jesus is going to be able to do something that day. My lesson is to remember that when I have a problem to hand it over Jesus
